A survey of ancient Indian literature.
Hindu Literature; or, The Ancient Books of India is a foundational late-19th-century American compendium of Sanskrit and Vedic texts compiled by the prominent Orientalist author Elizabeth A. Reed. Writing at a time when access to primary eastern texts was largely limited to elite European academia, Reed designed this volume as an accessible, highly structured thematic survey for the Western public. The book traces the chronological and philosophical evolution of Indian religious writing from the earliest oral Vedic hymns down to the later, sprawling medieval Puranas. Drawing heavily from contemporary English translations by European giants such as Max Müller and Sir Monier Monier-Williams, Reed contextualises essential Hindu doctrines—including karma, dharma, and reincarnation—within their broader socio-cultural frameworks.
Elizabeth A. Reed was one of the few prominent female scholars in the United States to gain formal recognition in the field of 19th-century Indology, eventually becoming a member of the International Congress of Orientalists. While Hindu Literature is written with the characteristic bias of a Victorian-era Western observer evaluating Eastern traditions, it is celebrated for its clarity and narrative pacing. By bringing the core storylines of the epics and structural breakdowns of the Vedas into public libraries across the United States, it heavily influenced early American comparative religion studies
